TYPES OF TREATMENT

ADVANTAGES

DISADVANTAGES

No surgery or drugs.
Leads to understanding.
Improves communication.
Indeterminate time frame.
Success rates vary.
Costs $75-$150 per hour.

Oral Medications
(Viagra)

Non-surgical.
Painless.
On demand.
Work in less than 70% of men with various etiologies.
Treatment must be continuous.
Possible unpleasant side effects.

Hormone Replacement
(Testosterone)

Non-surgical.
Painless.
May improve libido.
Effective only with severe testosterone deficiency.
May stimulate growth of prostate tissue, cause liver damage or increased generalized fluid retention.
Costs about $25-$35 monthly.

External Vacuum Therapy

Safe.
Non-surgical.
Use as often as desired.
May improve penile blood flow.
May result in occasional natural erection.
Over a 90﹪success rate.
Requires some manual dexterity and strength.
Must remove tension ring after 30 minutes.
Involves learning a manual technique.
May cause mild bruising.
Costs $400-$500.

Penile Injection Therapy

Non-surgical.
Rapid erectile response for about 70﹪.
Erection lasts 1-2 hours.
Requires test dosing and follow-up.
Use limited to twice a week.
Fibrosis or scarring may occur.
Prolonged painful erection may occur.
Annual cost (depending on frequency of use) $1000-$2000.

Semi-Rigid Penile Prostheses

Simple.
Less expensive than inflatables.
No mechanical parts to fail.
High success rate.
Requires a surgical procedure.
Permanent erection, may be difficult to conceal.
Risk of infection, rejection.
Alters internal structure of penis and may preclude other treatment.
Costs approximately $8,000-$12,000.

Self-Contained Inflatable Penile Prostheses

Controllable natural-like erection.
Very effective.
Less expensive than multi-component inflatable prostheses.
Requires a surgical procedure.
Risk of infection, rejection or mechanical failure.
Does not add to girth of penis.
Alters internal structure of penis and may preclude other treatment.
Costs approximately $10,000-$14,000.

Multi-Component Inflatable Penile Prostheses

Controllable natural-appearing erection.
Full-girth and true flaccidity.
Easily concealed.
High patient/partner satisfaction.
Requires a surgical procedure.
Highest cost of all prostheses.
Longer surgical time.
Risk of infection, rejection, or mechanical failure.
Alters internal structure of penis and may preclude other treatment.
Costs approximately $12,000-$15,000.

Reconstruction/Venous Ligation

Effective when problem is due to vascular obstruction or deformity. Sophisticated surgical procedure.
Effective for less than 1﹪.
Very high relapse rate.
Costs approximately $15,000-$20,000.

ABOUT UROKINGDOM

November 11th, 2007 by Dr. Hsieh

“My hands are vouchsafed by God. He will treat your disease through my hands, but I do not know to what extent you will be healed. It’s far beyond my knowledge to learn God’s will. So let us pray together now.” A doctor said the above words to his patient before performing an operation. This sounds somewhat sarcastic and yet it is partially true. In the fight against various diseases, humans are still in an uphill struggle to win the war. Owing to our limited capabilities to treat all the copious disorders of the human being, it is normal that doctors should always be in awe of the many diseases which afflict our human condition.

As a result of the innovation in high-tech medical equipment and surgical techniques, the skill in diagnosing and treating urological disease has been enormously improved in the past few years. However, such advanced knowledge is actually not well-known in our daily life. The public still has vague impressions about the science regarding the area “between the navel and the knees”. Sometimes they might even obtain wrong information; that’s the reason why I built this website.

In the future I will introduce some of the most common urological diseases (in English) and you will know the causes, symptoms and signs, available laboratory tests, treatment options, and preventive measures. The website will also provide a comprehensive layout of urological classifications, so that you can find out the information you need easily and efficiently. Most of all, I shall try to make all the articles in this site as clear as possible, and yet still include professional and scientific information. My hope is that this information will help you to recognize the presence of disease quickly and to be better prepared when you seek medical attention. Please do not hesitate to contact your doctor whenever you feel ill!
